Initially Jalan Malioboro was laid out as an imaginary axis between the South Coast ( Parangkusumo Beach ) - Kraton Yogya - Mount Merapi . Malioboro started to be crowded in the colonial era of 1790 when the Dutch government built the Vredeburg fort in 1790 at the southern end of this road.
Apart from building a fortress, the Dutch also built the Dutch Club in 1822, The Dutch Governor's Residence in 1830, Java Bank and the Post Office shortly thereafter. After that Malioboro grew rapidly due to trade between the Dutch and Tiong Hoa traders. In 1887 Jalan Malioboro was divided into two with the establishment of a train stop which is now called Tugu Yogya Station.
Malioboro Street also has an important role in the struggle for Indonesian independence. On the south side of Jalan Malioboro, there was a fierce battle between Indonesian fighters and Dutch colonial troops who wanted to occupy Yogya. This battle became known as the March 1, 1949 General Offensive, namely the success of the Red and White troops occupying Yogya for six hours and proving to the world that the Indonesian army still existed.
The road was for years a two-way street, but in the 1980s it became a single road, from the railroad line (where it started) to the south - to the Beringharjo market, where it ends. The largest, oldest hotel in the Netherlands , Hotel Garuda, is located at the north end of the road, on the east side adjacent to the railway. It has the former Dutch Prime Minister complex, kepatihan , on the east side.
Over the years in the 1980s and later, a cigarette advertisement was placed on the first building south of the railroad track - or effectively the last building in Malioboro, which advertised Marlboro cigarettes , no doubt appealing to both locals and foreigners alike. will see words with street names with foreign products being advertised.
It doesn't reach the walls or the courtyard of the Yogyakarta Palace , because Malioboro stops next to the huge Beringharjo market (on the east side too). From this point the name changed to Jalan Ahmad Yani (Jalan Ahmad Yani) and it has the former Governor's residence on the west side, and the old Dutch Vredeburg Fort on the east side.
